Another “useful object” verse this one also has a tiny hint of the (Victorian) schoolroom about it – learning to write! Like ‘F was a fan’ the opening section employs simple canonic imitations though these ones are in the matter-of-fact key of C rather than a fancy mode. The silent bars need to be entirely motionless. The second section in contrast is actually quite stern, an admonishment perhaps to the little person learning to write. The harmony is close and slightly dissonant so focus on getting this as neat as precise as good handwriting! The ending then revisits the “neat little inkstand” admiring it with simple objectivity.
