A fanfare, a royal anthem and a fugue fit for a King, Xerxes gets the full treatment which will be enhanced if singers can imagine the sounds of sackbuts and cornets. Measured in pace, the fanfare and anthem can be sung with plenty of pomp and splendour befitting the narcissistic monarch. Then increase the tempo for the three-part fugue with its wordless pom pomming and para pom poms. These should flow naturally and do not need to be strictly held to – allow the tongue and jaw to relax into the flowing counterpoints which will readily respond to a little practice. Fugues really can be fun!
